Understanding AI concepts and fake news
The sessions were designed to engage students from 7th-8th grade in primary and high school, primarily targeting girls. The aim was to introduce the possibilities, limitations, characteristics, applications, and risks of artificial intelligence (AI), thereby sparking girls’ interest in creative participation in the field. The workshops were held almost every Friday in April and May 2024, with over 250 participants. Each session began with a 30-minute introduction, covering topics from AI and machine learning to the main features of Generative AI. This included explaining the behavior of Maya (our white live Maltese dog) and the programming of Aibo (our 20-year-old black Sony AI robot dog) for intelligent behavior. This narrative aimed to connect new AI concepts to children’s prior knowledge by embedding them in familiar, real-world examples.
