Introduction

We are excited to announce the completion of the DRONE project report on gaps in literature and DRONE’s approach! This comprehensive report provides valuable insights into the digital literacy needs of European adolescents and offers recommendations for improving digital literacy education and combating disinformation.

Addressing Digital Literacy Gaps: Insights from the DRONE Project

In today’s digital age, where information spreads rapidly and can be easily manipulated, it’s crucial to equip young people with the skills to navigate online spaces critically and responsibly. The DRONE project aims to shed light on the digital literacy needs of European youth, particularly vulnerable groups, and to identify effective strategies for promoting digital literacy and combating disinformation.

To achieve these goals, the DRONE project team conducted a comprehensive gap analysis, which included a literature review and a review of good practices at the consortium level. Six in-depth national reports were produced for the participating countries (Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, and the Netherlands), each focusing on the specific context and challenges related to digital literacy, disinformation, and crisis management. These six reports were then synthesized into a single comprehensive report, providing a holistic view of the digital literacy landscape in Europe. A report was also produced for Ukraine, DRONE’s associated partner. Particular attention was paid to the specific needs of vulnerable adolescents, including students between 12 and 17 years old from low socio-economic backgrounds, migrants, Roma communities, those with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Key Findings and Recommendations

The DRONE project report presents several key findings and recommendations regarding digital literacy education in Europe.

Digital Literacy:

While progress has been made, disparities in digital literacy persist across Europe. Students often overestimate their skills and may not be fully prepared. To address these issues, it is crucial to provide ongoing training for teachers and school leaders, develop structured approaches for students, and support digital skills development through funding opportunities.

Disinformation:

National policies and research on disinformation are less prevalent than those on digital literacy. However, there is growing awareness and proactive measures are being taken. To combat disinformation effectively, teacher training, critical thinking skills, and resources are essential.

Artificial Intelligence:

AI integration in education is developed but still quite limited, except for Germany. However, there is a gradual introduction of AI into educational programming in a number of countries.

Crisis Management:

According to the report, there is a great need for training on issues related to crisis management, with a special focus on cyberbullying. Additionally, it seems that research on managing disinformation or cyberbullying is limited.

Vulnerable Adolescents:

A significant gap exists in policies and research addressing the digital needs of vulnerable adolescents. The DRONE project aims to address this gap through targeted interventions.

Digital Literacy Among Ukrainian Adolescents

The report also included a comprehensive study of digital skills among Ukrainian adolescents, focusing on their digital literacy levels, online behaviors, and attitudes toward technology. The study revealed that while digital literacy levels have improved in Ukraine, there is still room for growth, particularly among vulnerable groups. Adolescents are increasingly aware of the importance of digital skills for their education and future careers, but many still lack basic skills related to digital literacy. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, young people continue to adapt to digital technologies and utilize them for various purposes, including education, communication, and online shopping. However, concerns remain regarding data security and the potential risks associated with online activities.
